You pick up your phone dozens of times a day. A photo behind the case gives a familiar object a small, personal meaning: your sister laughing, a picture of home, the two of you on a very ordinary Tuesday. Here is how to choose a picture that works at that size.

Choose a face you can actually see.
A small print gives you less room than your phone screen. A close portrait, a couple standing together, or a pet filling the frame is usually easier to recognise than a group standing far away.
View the photo as a small thumbnail before you decide. If you have to zoom in to find the person, consider a closer picture or a tighter crop. Leave enough space around the face that you can adjust it without cutting off someone's forehead.
Go back to the original file.
If your favourite picture is a screenshot of an Instagram story, look for the original in your camera roll or ask the person who took it. Screenshots can carry text, interface elements and compression into the print.
Zoom in enough to check the eyes and important details. If they are already blurry, extra sharpening will not recreate what the camera missed. You can still choose that picture because it matters to you; just know what to expect from the print.
Think about the case and the photo together.

Knowing that someone has an iPhone is not enough. Different models and sizes have different camera layouts. Ask for the exact model rather than guessing from how the phone looks. It saves the disappointment of a lovely gift that does not fit.
Choose a photo they would enjoy carrying every day. A memory you share can be more personal than a formal portrait. If the gift is a surprise, let the photo do the talking and keep the message in the accompanying note.
